An exciting showdown of young designers: the Roca One-Day Design Challenge comes to an end!

November 1, 2021, Shanghai, the fourth "Roca One-Day Design Challenge" organized by Roca, a century-old Spanish bathroom brand, was successfully concluded on October 30 in Roca Shanghai Art Gallery. During the 8-hour creative challenge, young talents from all walks of life in the design industry showed the spark of inspiration for the creation of a modern bathroom lifestyle. The jury composed of Roca representatives and many design experts announced the winners of "Roca One Day Design Challenge", encouraging fresh blood for the development of design.

Internationalization Platform, New Power in China

Innovation is inspired by design, starts with young concepts, and is dedicated to the future user experience. In order to inspire more young designers to participate in design research and development, and to introduce unique and practical solutions for the bathroom experience, Roca has been organizing the "Roca One Day Design Challenge" since 2012.

This event originated in Barcelona has developed into an international exchange and interaction platform, held annually in cities around the world, the past winner also has the opportunity to go to the Roca headquarters in Barcelona with the world's outstanding talent to compete for the ultimate prize. Through this international design event, Roca expects to help Chinese designers develop their talents and contribute to the bright future of Chinese design.

The fourth Roca One Day Design Challenge in Shanghai this year attracted many young designers. With the growing importance of hand hygiene, the theme of this year's challenge was "Designing Basin Faucets with Additional Functions", aiming to inspire more innovation in the field of faucets. During the eight hours of intense collision of ideas, the participants created a series of solutions with both performance and foresight, and all kinds of creative ideas originating from hygiene needs and solutions to challenges showed the vigor of the new generation of designers.

Powerful thinking, unlimited creativity

On the day of the competition, the site was filled with an intense atmosphere of inspiration. After 8 hours of brainstorming, participants submitted creative bathroom solutions. After evaluating many outstanding works, the jury finally awarded the first place to the FLO sensor faucet designed by Tian Yuan and Sun Qirui from Shanghai Jiaotong University. The work has a futuristic and simple appearance, and through the contactless gesture control of different positions on the side of the water level ring to control different water flow patterns to meet different water needs, demonstrating the comprehensive strength of aesthetics, intelligence and multi-functionality.

The second place went to the Flow bathtub faucet by Yang Junran and Wang Qian from Art Center College of Design (USA). Inspired by smart technology and family lifestyles, this work innovatively and naturally integrates bathroom lifestyle products into two curves that are user-friendly and feasible at the same time.


The third place winners were He Jiaping and Lin Zhouyi from the Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts, whose SW Smart Sensor Water Saving Faucet was designed to help users save water by reducing the amount and area of water discharged through the sensing function. The winners said, "We will consider how to make the design more user-friendly and convenient in actual use, and reduce the pressure on the environment. As design students, we hope to contribute to society with what we have learned."

A number of crossover design experts made up the ace judging lineup for the Roca One-Day Design Challenge, including architect, interior designer, founder and director of Eight Wastes Design, Xuelian Dong; co-founder and design director of HATCH, RIBA China Chapter Member, Hongtao Wei; and RIBA China Chapter Member, Hongtao Wei. member of RIBA China Chapter), Ren Tangyin, Partner of CBi & Co-Founder of Successful Design Platform, Diego Fuertes Pedrosa, Partner, Creative Director and Product and Space Designer of Diego Fuertes Studio, and Emilio Salazar, General Manager of Roca China.


As industry elites, expert judges with senior industry experience and insightful vision, not only on-site works from various aspects of the high level of judgment, but also to the participants put forward valuable suggestions to guide, with the intention of tapping into the new generation of designers' strength and potential, to help China's newborn design power.
